The Arts and Athletics Jazz Ensemble is an afterschool music club intended for students already proficient on their instruments. Building on that foundation, students will begin to explore the wider world of jazz music for the first time. This means an overview of and deep dive into the three main components of jazz: swing, improvisation, and the blues. A key component of the jazz ensemble is a regular schedule of performance opportunities throughout the year. This class will give students all the skills and experience they need to audition with confidence for their middle school, high school, and collegiate jazz programs.
Just as afterschool Study Time provides time and space for children to work through their homework, alongside classmates and with the help of supportive adults, Study Time Jam introduces the same opportunity for instrumental music practice, for trumpet, clarinet, and violin.
When students finish their reading and math, they can grab their trumpets and work on scales and songs and technique, progressing in their musical skill through extending time with their instruments.
